"There's been an accident..."

Hey Reader,

I woke up Monday energized and ready to dive into work. I dropped Sonia off at summer camp and posted up at my favorite coffee shop.

It was going to be such a good day.

I was wrapping up my first meeting when I got a text message that no parent wants to get.

"There's been an accident..."

Elena had fallen down an entire flight of stairs.

For a moment it felt like the world was spinning too fast. I couldn't really hear what the person in front of me was saying. I tried to quickly wrap up the meeting and apologized for needing to leave.

As someone very attuned to my nervous system, I noticed my body quietly turning down the volume of panic as I slipped into the stillness of action.

A few "what ifs" popped up, and I acknowledged the scariness and lack of control I was feeling. I whispered a barely audible, "It's all going to be ok," to myself.

I shook out my hands.

I took a deeper breath. Then another.

I stayed present.

Several hours later, we were back at home. We were lucky--so very lucky. Elena, the little tank that she is, has a nasty contusion on her forehead, but no fractures, no lasting damage.

Today, I don't feel frazzled. I feel grateful. The girls and I stood barefoot in the garden together, practicing our "I ams", feeling the coolness of the wet grass under our feet, connecting back to ourselves and the earth.

We added in some karate kicks and happy feet dancing to really get us going. Little Elena joined us enthusiastically watching and mimicking every move we made.

Grounded. Present. Whole.

This is the work. Flexible self-regulation. Repair. Integration.

I'm so thankful to be able to practice the tools that I teach, and doubly thankful to be able to support my girls and my family with these tools.

The future isn't so scary when you know how to come home to yourself.

XO

Tamra

Let's meet for coffee

Summer is winding down, and I finding new routines and rhythms to nourish me as school kicks off. I want more coffee dates in my life.

Text me. Let's grab a coffee and gab about life.

SOMATIC TIP FOR BUSINESS:

work can wait

I wonder how many of us are becoming so accustomed to stress, disaster, and tragedy, that we continue to show up each day at work, turn on our laptops, and pretend everything is ok while our nervous systems are quietly unraveling.

I took Tuesday off work. I unplugged. I nourished myself. I repaired with myself.

I got extra sunshine. I practiced my tools to come home to myself. I rested.

The trauma of Monday has been processed and integrated. I won't have nightmares, flashbacks, or added anxiety.

My body knows, It's over. I'm safe now.

Today, I'm ok. Really ok.

But so many people aren't.

Because they don't have sick leave or paid time off OR they won't take it.

This makes me want to scream. The way we approach work and life is wildly unsustainable. It cannot continue this way.

Leaders, if you have power in your organization to change this, you must. You must be a champion for your people.

We are humans first. Work can wait.

Somatic tip for life:
– touch some grass, for real

I won't re-hash the benefits of grounding work again. However, I will say I think the secret to more a more joyful, present life is simple.

But we aren't simple.

People over complicate everything. Spend hundreds each month on supplements and the latest wellness gadget, but don't get even 5k steps in the day.

When was the last time you stood barefoot in the grass and felt the sunshine on your face?

When was the last time you ate a vegetable? Or ate 25g of fiber? Or cooked a whole meal you enjoyed?

The last time you hugged a friend?

It's time to come back home to ourselves, come home to the foundations of a life well-lived.

You don't need another shot of espresso in the middle of the workday.

You need to go for a walk, drink some water, shake out our hands and feet, look someone in the eyes, and ask them How are you really doing?

WANT TO DIVE DEEPER IN THIS WORK?
