You are magnificent

Hey Reader,

I've been doing a lot of time travel lately.

I was formally introduced to the concept of time travel about six years ago. (More on that later, I promise. Stick with me.) I've dabbled with it. I've taught it to clients. It's been a tool that I use in my practice quite often, really.

And then this past year smacked me right in the face. In the very best way possible. Being a mom of two required so much more of me. Motherhood remade me. I know I've said that before, but it's just so true.

I used to hate my hooded eyelids. Every time I'd look in the mirror, I'd wonder how'd I'd look if I got them snipped away. A little snip, a little tuck. What if...

But then, one day, I noticed those same eyes staring up at me from my daughter's little face.

And all I saw was beauty. It cracked me wide open, and so I was confronted, quite literally, with the parts of me that needed more love because Motherhood required this of me.

To love more deeply, more gently, more unconditionally.

So, this past year has been spent with all the parts of me that needed a bit more love.

I've taken my own face in my hands, and whispered, "You are magnificent." Over and over again.

To the four year old me that was frozen in fear.

To the seven year old me that was learning that self-hatred was self-preservation.

To the teenage me, full of loneliness and longing to be seen.

You are magnificent.

You are lovely.

I adore you.

And in those moments the future has unraveled in new ways.

You might be thinking, Respectfully, what in the woo are you talking about Tamra?

Stick with me, and I'll tell you the neuroscience of memory reconsolidation.

But first, I want to just rest in the magic of transformation for myself and my clients.

Time travel changes us.

It sets us free.

Free from the past that has a death grip on our now.

With every client I saw the past two weeks, time travel changed the now.

The body lets go of the stored tension. The trauma in our fascia. The inability to take a deep breath. The constant readiness to fight or flee. The stories that play out unconsciously again and again in our minds.

Just today, someone told me they'd never experienced anything like this as we merged time travel with somatic release. Using the body to move through emotions and trauma so deeply stuck in the body.

I knew that this session was another pebble dropped into the ocean, creating a new ripple in time, and reshaping the coast line of another person's life.

XO

The Neuroscience of Time Travel:

maybe we really are made of magic

Before I knew the science of time travel, I knew it worked. It felt like magic as I revisited memories and re-patterned loops of emotions that were stuck on autopilot.

I didn't know why, but it worked.

Well now, I know the why -- memory reconsolidation.

Memory reconsolidation involves 3 steps:

Step 1 — Reactivate the memory

A practitioner helps the client access the old neural network — the original felt sense, imagery, sensations.

This opens a “window” in the brain where the memory becomes unstable and malleable for 4–6 hours.

Step 2 — Introduce mismatching safety or new meaning

The client stays connected to:

  • A regulated body (window of tolerance is key here, give that a google)
  • A supportive practitioner who anchors their nervous system
  • Their adult self resources
  • New emotional experiences (compassion, choice, empowerment)

This new information contradicts the original learning (e.g., “I’m alone,” “I’m powerless,” “I’m not safe”).

Step 3 — The brain rewrites the memory on the spot

When the memory is “saved” again, it is saved with the new emotional associations and physiological responses.

This is the actual rewriting of neural circuitry, confirmed through fMRI and neuroplasticity research.

This is why people feel:

  • Relief
  • Resolution
  • Integration
  • Decreased reactivity
  • Increased capacity

It’s because the brain physically updated the memory. When you experience this process, it just might feel like magic. And, for the brilliant, analytical folks out there, you can rest easy that this practice is actually rooted in neuroscience. As a trauma qualified, internal family systems informed, somatic practitioner, it's my jam.
